Biography from Leonard Davenport Fine Arts / LSDArt:
Leonard Buggiani was born in Castelfiorentino, Florence and studied art in Florence and Rome.  In 1955, at the age of 22, he participated in the national competition: Incontri della Gioventù, and won a first place award.  He was invited to 1° Salone d'Estate along with thirty-one other artists of the Roman avant garde including Accardi Burri, Cagli Capogrossi, Colla Franchina, Mannucci, Mirko Novelli, Perilli, Rotella Tot, and Turcato e Uncini. Buggiani was accepted into the group even though the majority of the artists were 20 years older and already well established.  In 1956 Buggiani had his first one-man show at the Schneider gallery of Rome presented by Corrado Cagli.

In Paris, Buggiani met Severini Matta, Victor Brauner and Vilfredo Lam who introduced him to the gallery Glasier-Cordiè where he had a one man show in 1958.  A number of exhibits followed with his first cataloged one being in 1960 in Schneider Gallery in Rome.

He moved to New York in 1962.  In 1968, he received the Guggenheim Fellowship for sculpture in America for experimenting with a new method of sculpture called the Vacuum Forming System.

Returning to Italy in May 1968, he was active both in Rome and Milan.  Buggiani's work at the time included Ephemeral Sculpture in Motion and Fire, a Performing Art in nature.

Buggiani returned to New York in 1978 where his work continued his combination of performance and sculpture, often in the streets of New York and Rome.  This work brought him popularity as one of the members of the Street Art Movement, along with Keith Haring, Richard Hambleton, Ken Hiratsuka, Linus Coraggio, and R.V. (Robin Vanarsdol).  He contributed the cover art for the Keith Haring - Subway Drawings in New York Street Art, published by the Whitney Museum.

Since 1979 he has been sharing his time between New York and the medieval town of Isola Farnese, in Rome, where he paints and sculpts.

Today Buggiani remains an independent contemporary artist, recognized for his installations of fire sculptures, notably in New York City.
