Charles Thomas Burt was an English Midlands landscape painter,
1823-1902, born in Wolverhampton, England and pupil of Samuel Lines from
Birmingham. He was a friend and pupil of David Cox (q.v.) who
influenced Burt's painting style.
His expressive palette shows
all the qualities associated with the Birmingham School. His light fresh
palette contrasts with the heavy colors of the Norwich and Suffolk
Schools, giving his subjects a brighter and attractive quality. He swept
aside the darker clouds of David Cox and allowed light to echo broadly
across his landscapes.
Burt exhibited 18 paintings at the Royal
Academy (1850-1892), 6 paintings at the British Institute, 6 paintings
at Suffolk Street, one painting at Grosvenor Gallery, and various other
paintings at the Society of British Artists and in the provinces. He was
a member of the Birmingham Society of Artists, 1856. He specialized in
highland and moorland landscapes.
