This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Bruce Heggtveit (1917 – 2002)

A popular Ottawa, Ontario painter and art teacher, Bruce Heggtveit (aka: Bruce Allen Heggtveit) was born in Maidstone, Saskatchewan and died in Ottawa where he had lived since childhood. His mediums included oils and pastels. He painted portraits, but his most well known subjects were landscapes, snowscapes, rivers, lakes, shorelines and genre scenes, depicting the rural areas of Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. His styles were Impressionism* and Plein Air Painting*. AskART images have some excellent illustrations of his work.

While he painted for most of his life, Heggtveit was first known to the Canadian public as the National Cross-Country Skiing Champion of 1938. He studied art in Ottawa under Ernest Fosbery and Frank Hennessey (see both in AskART) and turned to painting and teaching art professionally after his competitive skiing career had ended. Heggtveit taught Plein Air Painting* classes “on location” for the Ottawa School of Art and for Saint Lawrence College.

Robertson Galleries and the Den-Art Gallery, both of Ottawa, were among his dealers.

His paintings have been avidly collected from galleries and at auction for decades. His works are also in the permanent collections of the Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa) and the City of Ottawa Art Collection.
