Edwin Thomas Johns (1862-1947)

Born at Ipswich in 1862, youngest of the five children of William Johns of South Wales, a carpenter, and his wife Isabella née Wardle, of London who in 1871 were living at 26 Tacket Street, Ipswich.  Young Edwin attended the Ipswich School of Art under W T Griffiths [q.v.]  and in 1877 articled to architect James Butterworth (1831-1916) of 6 Museum Street, Ipswich and on Butterworth’s retirement completed his articles with William Eade (1841-1927) and became his assistant.  He had some time worked with Brightwen Binyon [q.v.] before rejoining Eade, trading as Eade & Johns until 1912, when Eade retired and Edwin carried on, on his own account from 8 Lower Brook Street.  In 1921 he was joined by his nephew Martin Johns Slater (1892-1900) under the name of Johns & Slater until Johns retired in 1933.
