Oscar Wilhelm Lüthy (Oskar Wilhelm Lüthy) studied architecture at the School of Applied Arts, Bern, Switzerland, and lived from 1903 to 1907 in the Canton of Valais.  There he made his first attempts at painting, which was the plein aire method. Then he went temporarily to Munich for private painting classes with Hans Lietzmann, and came into contact with religious painting.

In 1911 he founded a modernist organization, The Artist Group, with Jean Arp and Walter Helbig in Weggis, and with that Group, participated in three exhibitions until 1913, including in 1912 the Kunsthaus Zurich.

After studying in Italy and Paris, he settled in Zurich.

From 1918 to 1920 he participated in exhibitions with the Basel Artists Association "New Life". In 1920 he signed the Dadaistenmanifest. Through his friendship with the painter Otto Meyer-Amden, he turned increasingly to anthroposophy and to Christian mysticism.

In 1925, the Dresden City Museum acquired his painting Madonna. The work was supported by the National Socialists and was exhibited in Dresden in 1933 at the Degenerate Art Show exhibition in the courtyard of the Dresden New Town Hall and then traveled to eight other German cities. In 1937 the painting hung in Lüthy in Munich at the great exhibition of the same on the south wall in Room 1, along with pictures of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Emil Nolde.

His further fate is unknown. Lüthy received numerous commissions in Switzerland from religious institutions; his last great work was the altarpiece for the church of Christ in Oerlikon (1941-1942).
