Henri Mélis was born on September 1, 1845 in Sas van Gent.  His parents came from Belgium. In 1852 the family moved to Rotterdam where they lived at various addresses.  In Rotterdam  he attended  the Academie  voor Beeldende Kunsten.  He left the academy prematurely in order to develop his skills by self-tuition.  It is, however known, that during 1859 and 1866 he won several prizes in various catagories.  He  later became a teacher at this Academy.  In 1865 he qualified as an Art Teacher.  In 1871 he moved to The Hague where he lived and worked in Scheveningen.  In 1880  he  returned to Rotterdam and in 1884 he finally settled down in the village Charlois near Rotterdam.  He remained there until his death on the 14th March 14, 1923.

He married in 1893 and had four sons.

His work was influenced by the Haagsche School.  He painted in water colors as  well as in oils.  He was also known to make etchings and pencil drawings.  Later in life he painted mainly interiors of farmhouses.

In articles he was described as a student of nature and a lover of beautiful landscapes and picturesque scenery.  He would spend months in the area around Rotterdam.  His interiors are famous for their beautiful realism and bear the stamp of a carefully planned conception with a well trained eye for artistic detail.  Furthermore he was famous for his wonderful color range. He was a born colorist.

He won several prizes, including four gold and three silver medals.

Information provided by Henri Mélis, the artist's grandson.
