He began painting while serving in the RAF.  His work was first exhibited at the University of Toronto in 1942, during a tour of duty in Ontario, Canada.  In 1945 he studied art under Sir Francis Rose and took lessons from Augustus John.  He studied at Camberwell College of Arts, in London, from 1948-49.

During the Korean War, he went off to serve as a war-artist.  After the war, he went to Japan for three years, where he worked as an industrial design consultant for textile companies.  In the late 1950’s, he returned to London, England.

In 1960, he traveled to southern France where he stayed in a Monastery and produced a number of impressionist paintings.  In 1962 he visited Berlin with the result that his painting assumed a social and satirical perspective, depicting the desperation of refugees.

In 1963, Michael Horsley changed his name to Michael Horsley-Millman and traveled to Cuba, where he met his first wife, Maribel Morales.  They were married and decided to spend their honeymoon aboard a ship to Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Arriving in Montreal in late 1963, he continued to paint and from 1964 to 1965  he was Artist in Residence at the Loyola Bonsecours Centre for exploration in the Arts.  In 1967. he worked as a consultant to the city of Montreal for the 1967 World’s Fair “ Expo 1967 - Man and His World”.

While in Montreal, his children Alanna, Christian, and Francesca were born.  In 1968 he returned to Cuba.  In 1969, he traveled to Israel.  From 1969 to 1975 he lived in New York, where his daughter Cassandra was born.  In 1975, he returned to London, England where he lived until 1981.
