John Jacob Schneider was born February 20, 1822 in Basel, Switzerland. As a youth he had taken a considerable interest in the history of this city which dates back to the B.C. years when a Roman fort and vicus was situated on the left bank of Rhine.  In this pursuit he accurately sketched many of the century-old buildings and streets in Basel.  As he developed his artistic talents, he reproduced these sketches in watercolors, which resulted during his lifetime in hundreds of valuable, detailed paintings of "Alt Basel".  Many of these are preserved in the Museum in Basel.  Recently 32 of them were used as postcards, and during the Basel centennial celebration twenty of the favorites were printed as historic sale items.

He began his career as designer of patterns in a ribbon factory owned by Theo Meyer in Neubau, St. Johannvorstadt in Basel.  He was the uncle of George Meyer, husband of Salome Magdalena (Gyssler), whose daughter, Emilie Meyer, he married in the 1840's.  Later he continued his designing in wallpaper and owned a wallpaper shop in Basel.

John Jacob and Emilie Schneider had two children, Emilie born in 1844, died in 1854, and Emil born February 26, 1846, died June 30, 1867.  About three years after the birth of Emil, John Jacob's wife, Emilie, died.

On January 9, 1851 in the St. Jacob's Church near Basel, John Jacob remarried.  He married Emilie Gyssler, the youngest sister of Salome (by about 20 years) who had offered her services as nurse to the ailing niece during her last illness.

Mathilde Julianna Schneider was born on February 19, 1852.  Emil and Mathilde were inseparable as children; they had both inherited and developed the artistic talent of their father.  In the short span of his life Emil sketched and painted many beautiful pictures.  He was also a mechanical engineer in the Emil Kussman & Co., a construction company in Basel.

John Jacob died shortly after the death of his wife, Emilie Gyssler, who died February 27, 1889.  He had gone to Bad Ettingen for his health when he had a sudden heart attack in the night of July 2, 1889 at the age of 67.  His funeral was on Saturday, July 8th, 1889, at 2 p.m. in Basel, Switzerland.
