Born in Cork, Peter Sheldon Williams studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London and later on the continent. He changed his name to “A. Oscar” to avoid being confused with another artist Inglis Sheldon Williams (1870-1940). He held his first exhibition in 1936 at the Galerie Zak in Paris. In the following year the Wertheim Gallery gave him a joint show with Alan Pinder and many others followed, including one at the Windsor Arts Centre, 1986. (See Grant M. Waters, Dictionary of British Artists Working 1900-1950, Eastbourne Fine Art, 1975, p. 347, under “Oscar”).
