This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Greenland and raised in New York City, Dan Smith became a magazine illustrator for Leslie's for seven years, 1890 to 1897, and after that was an artist-correspondent Hearst newspapers and reported on the Spanish American War.  "For more than 20 years his covers were used for the Sunday World magazine section.  His dry brush drawings were syndicated nationally." (449)

At age 14, he went from New York to Copenhagen, where he attended the Public Arts Institute, and then back in the United States, he became a student in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Traveling for Leslie's, he did drawings "on the spot" beginning January, 1891, of troubles at Wounded Knee near Pine Ridge.  He also did sketching around Albuquerque, which indicate he made at least one trip to the Southwest.
