Born in Moscow in 1892, he received his initial artistic training at the I L Kopylov art school in Irkurtsk. Sokolov also studied at VKhuTEMAS and under Petrov Vodkin. He exhibited in America in 1924
Sokolov illustrated children's books and magazines. Books written by Kornei Chukovsky; Evgeni Shvartz and others. Magazines such as Ezh & Vorobei published by Detgiz.
He worked with and was later imprisoned with Vera Ermolaeva and V V Sterligov. He was also as close friend of the poet Nikolai Oleinikov. He designed stage sets and costumes for the Bolshoi and Malyi theatres, namely Ruslan & Ludmila, Poor Columbus, Tosca and many others, and was the principal artist at Sverdlovsk Opera Theatre.
Solokov was arrested in 1935, imprisoned for counter revolutionary agitation. He was executed by firing squad in 1938, rehabilitated in 1989.
