Biography from Nedra Matteucci Galleries:
Among the European artists who found their way to Taos in the course of their career was Josef Svoboda.  The artist was born in 1889 in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  He came to the U.S. in the midst of his formative years and at a time when he could benefit from U.S. university studies in fine art.

Svoboda eventually became a student of painting at the Art Institute of Chicago where he studied with Antonin Sterba, Ralph Clarkson, Hans Larwin and with the young Kentucky painter, Walter Ufer, who in 1917 was to be elected to the Taos Society of Artists.

Svoboda too was smitten with the Taos allure and came to Taos in the summer throughout the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s to paint and to exhibit in the gallery at the Harwood Foundation.

Svoboda distinguished himself as a painter but also as a lithographer, an illustrator and a lecturer on fine art.  He was based in Dallas, where he was the artistic director for the Herbert Rogers Co.  He belonged to the Dallas Art Association and the Dallas Museum of Fine Art as well as to the American Federation of Artists and the Bohemian Art Club.
