This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

An art dealer and amateur artist, David Croal Thomson was director from 1878 to 1896 of Goupil Gallery, which was the London division of the French art dealer firm of Boussod, Valadon & Cie.  He had special interest in Dutch Art and the Barbizon School and also was a promoter in England of French Impressionism.

Between 1892 and 1902, he edited the Art Journal and wrote books including The Barbizon School of Painters (1890),  Corot (1892) and The Brothers Maris (1907).  He was very admiring of James McNeill Whistler, whom he first met in 1880, and in the 1890s, he became his main dealer.  Thomson also did drawings and paintings, including nocturnes that were regarded as quite average.
