William A Toplis, artist of Sark (Channel Islands, United Kingdom), was born March 24, 1857 and died November 27, 1942. He was a prolific seascape and landscape artist with eighteen painting exhibited at the Royal Academy, London.
2008 is the centenary of the publication of the rare, limited edition publication, The Book of Sark, containing 21 prints of his most famous paintings. The book is to be reproduced, using the original, 100-year-old metal plates and matching, as far as possible, the materials and techniques used one hundred years ago.
The painting Venus Bath (Bather by a Pool) took 25 years to complete because of the difficulties in time and tide.
