Karl Bogdanovich Wenig (Estonian-Russian, 1830-1908) was a painter and professor, born in Tallinn (Reval), Estonia in 1830. He studied historical painting at the St. Petersburg Academy, Russia, in 1844 under Fyodor (Fidelio) Antonowitsch Bruni (Italian-Russian, 1799-1875) and won a scholarship to further his studies in Rome from 1853-1862. While in Rome, Wenig devoted himself to the study of the Renaissance painters and painted his Entombment of Christ for which he was appointed a member of the Imperial Russian Academy of Arts.

Wenig later settled back in St. Petersburg, and he taught as a professor at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts from 1862-1894 and continued to teach and paint until his death in 1908.

He also had several alias and various spellings on his name: Karl Bogdanovich Venig; Karl Gottlied Wenig; and Karl Bogdanowitsch Wenig.

His paintings depict historical Russian figures (such as Ludwig II of Bavaria, Tsar Ivan IV ‘The Terrible’ and Dmitri I), Russian winter troika sleigh scenes, scenes of Biblical and Shakespearian themes, Cossacks scenes, seascapes and figurative work.

Works include: An altarpiece Christ on the Cross (c1886, restored 2007) at St. John’s Church, Tallinn, Estonia; Two Angels of Sodom In Response; The Birth of Mary, Assumption; The Crucifixion of Christ; The Last Minutes of False Dmitriy I (1879, AKA The Last Minutes of the Rebels, Grigory Otrepyev [his real name], State Art Museum, Nizhney Novgorod, Russia); Tsar Ivan IV (1530-84) the Terrible and his Wet Nurse (1886); and Romeo and Juliet.
