This biography from the Archives of AskART:
An 1896 graduate of the Saugatuck High School in Saugatuck, Michigan Miss Bessie Bandle attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago beginning the school year of 1898-99.   During her first summer home, her father, J.H. Bandle, built an annex to the resort, just north of the Saugatuck Village limits on Riverside Drive, to be used for sleeping rooms.  In the summer of 1900, Bandle invited some of her classmates for an extended visit to paint in the picturesque countryside.  Her guests included Albert H. Krebiel, John Warner Norton, Walter Enright, Galin Joseph Perrett and Horace Brown.  They were to all go on to become working artists.  This would likely be the beginning of what would later become known as the Oxbow School, officially founded by Frederick Fursman and Walter Marshall Clute, in 1910.

In 1902 after graduation from the Chicago school began work as a teacher of drawing in the city schools of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and in 1909 was named head of the art department at Ferris Institute in Big Rapids, Michigan.

Submitted April 2007 by Edward Bentley, art collector and researcher from Lansing, Michigan
