This biography from the Archives of AskART:

The following information was submitted by Cheryl Johnson Ludecke, great-niece of the artist:

A landscape, portrait, genre painter and caricaturist, Arthur Johnson was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1874 of German heritage on his mother's side.  His father was Charles F. Johnson, owner and editor of the German/American newspaper in Cincinnati, Ohio, and US Consul to Hamburg, Germany under President Harrison.

Johnson attended a technical school in Hamburg, transferring to the academic high school for picture arts in Berlin in 1898.  Beginning in 1902/03, he studied at the master studios for landscape painting under A. Hertel, and spent 8 months in Rome, Italy after winning the Michael Geer Prize.

Johnson exhibited his works (portrait studies) for the first time in 1898 in Berlin, followed by exhibitions in 1899, 1908, and later.  Praised for his solid technique, he garnered the most acclaim for his sense of color and form, evident in his landscapes and later in his satirical paintings and caricatures.

Works such as Sonnenrausch (sun intoxication), Stille (quietness), Romantische Landschaft (romatic landscape) and Badende Kinder (bathing children), have been called "poetry  in color" and "hymns on nature".

From 1906 to 1944 Johnson served as caricaturist for Kladderadatsch Magazine in Berlin, creating satirical and political caricatures and numerous magazine covers.

He died 1954 in Berlin.
