Biography from Altamira Fine Art:
Willem Volkersz was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 1939. In the 1950's, his family emigrated to Seattle where he studied art and architecture at the University of Washington; he received an MFA in painting at Mills College in 1967.

Volkersz creates mixed media works that combine painting, neon, found objects and handcrafted elements. These narrative sculptures reflect an immigrant’s fascination with travel, popular culture, and the American West. His work brings a humorous and subversive eye to the idyllic luster of Americana. He has a broad appreciation for folk art and popular culture. His work is both personal and far-reaching.

Growing up in post-war America, he gravitated toward the ephemera of the era. Volkersz has been making and showing his art since the mid-1960's, and his work has been featured in 44 solo exhibitions and over 200 group shows in the U.S., Canada, England, Scotland, China, and Taiwan.

His work can be found in numerous public and private collections, including Booth Western Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum, Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture, Museum of Neon Art, Nicolaysen Art Museum, and Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art.

Volkersz is the recipient of grants from the Gottlieb Foundation, George Sugarman Foundation, Mellon Foundation, the Montana Arts Council, and he received a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award.

His writing and photography have appeared in numerous books, catalogs and periodicals, including Raw Vision, Public Art Review and Folk Art Messenger.

He taught for many years at the Kansas City Art Institute and, from 1986 until his retirement in 2001, at Montana State University where he was Director of the School of Art and now serves as Professor Emeritus. He and his wife Diane live in Bozeman, Montana.
