This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Melvin Johansen was born in Oakland, CA in 1915.  During WWII Johansen worked on optical and aircraft instruments at Alameda Naval Base.  After the war, he traveled North America photographing wildlife and collecting specimens. 

He began his career as a taxidermist and at the Snow Museum of Natural History in Oakland and retired as senior curator in 1972 to devote his time to sculpting big game animals. 

He is a member of the National Sculpture Society and his works are held at the National Museum of Wildlife.  He currently lives in Roseville, California and continues to sculpt.
