This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Eileen Starr Moderbacher's work is often a constant jarring pairing of visual contrasts; sharp and soft focus, plants and people, detailed painting and sketched drawing side by side.  Her paintings often contain an unsettling juxtaposition of content.  Passionate lovers take backstage to soft plants.  Domestic bliss co-exists with soldiers and guns.  Home is surrounded by war and garbage.  It questions what aspects of life are real, the threats, the struggle or the private moments.  The landscape of her paintings reflects a modern paranoia where they become the site of a scene where disturbing events may have happened, could happen or will happen.

She received her MFA from California College of the Arts in 2007.  In the same year she received a large amount of press, both from printed and televised media, when she disputed a Mill Valley gallery's attempts to censor her work.
