This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Jacques J. Valin
was born and educated in France. His basic training was in architecture. After WWII, Jacques came to
Toronto, Canada, where he worked as a draftsman. In 1955 he moved to California and, upon being
hired by Walt Disney Productions on the Disney Project then under construction, he settled down in
Burbank. Later, as a Licensed Architect, Jacques worked for the Disney Company and freelanced in
the major Hollywood studios as a set designer.
Since his retirement from the Industry he devotes
most of his time to plein-air oil painting: harbor scenes are among his
favorite subjects.
His mentors were Herb Ryman and Sergei Bongart. He considers himself lucky to
have met these two Masters.
Jacques' son Michael, a General Contractor, lives in Kilauea, Kauai,
with his wife Katie and their two young children, Kaleia and Sean. Whenever Jacques visits them, he
falls under the spell of the grand Hawaiian scenery. The shapes and the colors of "The Garden
Isle" together with its dramatic skies make it a constant source of inspiration.
His philosophy is captured in the following: "Yes, we live in
a beautiful world and if, through our efforts, we can leave it just a little bit better that we
found it, then it all makes sense" (Robert Mansfield, Walt Disney Imagineering
Engineer)
