Biography from The Michael Fratrich Fine Art Gallery:
Michael Fratrich began his career as a professional artist in 1983, when he sold his first oil painting of a rural farm scene at the age of fifteen during a solo exhibit in Northern New Jersey.  A self taught artist, Fratrich’s distinctive renderings have evolved from a practiced and exhaustive study of early American masters, particularly George Inness, and also from his experience with the artist and writer Eric Sloane. "I am very fortunate to have known him as a child, and to have studied his work during my own artistic coming of age," Fratrich states. "To this day, I still apply a great deal of what I have learned from Sloane to my own artistic philosophy."

Fratrich's renderings generally follow his life's passion for the idyllic American rural scene.  And his keen ability to capture the  mood of worthy American Ideals remains the trademark endemic to his body of work. Consequently, Fratrich's paintings typically sponsor a pride and appreciation for the laudable subjects of our worthy American heritage. "What I am doing through my traditional paintings," Fratrich claims, "is celebrating an underlying American Spirit.”

Michael Fratrich's paintings are often associated with the work of Eric Sloane, Andrew Wyeth, and American School artists.  Smaller Fratrich paintings are recognizable descendants of Eric Sloane‘s unique painting technique.  They are directly painted, and, although they are finished paintings, they are used by the artist as architectural studies for larger scale paintings.  Fratrich’s larger works are rendered using indirect painting methods, and feature a higher degree of elaboration and finish.  A fuller breadth of distance, air, and landscape is represented, often with a quite correct architectural compliment.

Fratrich and his wife, Tylene, experienced first hand the tragedy of 9-11, residing in Manhattan at the time.  It was that event, coupled with the calling Michael felt to return to a bucolic scene, that prompted him and his wife to relocate permanently to Manchester Vermont, where he maintains his Studio.

Fratrich’s paintings have been exhibited nationally in numerous fine art galleries and museums, including The Bennington Center for the Arts, The Southern Vermont Art Center, and The Manchester Vermont Fine Art Gallery.
