Biography from Verna Glancy Fine Art:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Professor Zhou Ping-Guang, a senior-level scholar in Chinese painting, emigrated from China in 1998 as “An outstanding Artist”. His father, Zhou Qi-He was a master of Sichuan opera and friends with many notable Chinese artists including Xu Bei-hong, Fu Bao-shi and Zhang Da-quian. Growing up, Zhou Ping-Guang was surrounded by the paintings of these masters and was encouraged to study traditional Chinese painting under the tutorship of Zhang Cai-qin and Zhao Yun-yu.

His father, Zhou Qi-He was his first teacher. He was always the first appreciator and critic of Ping-Guang’s paintings. He taught Ping-Guang that a good painter was one who poured his whole heart and soul into his paintings, endowing them with his own personality. His brilliant performance and his serious attitude towards art imperceptibly influenced Zhou Ping-Guang as an artist.

Zhou Ping-Guang is well known for his flower-and-bird paintings. His paintings are gorgeous in color but distinct in style and theme. He adopts gongbi, a traditional Chinese realistic painting style characterized by fine brushwork and close attention to detail. Gongbi is just like regular calligraphy script, emphasizing a similarity in appearance. Freehand brushwork is similar to cursive hand calligraphy, stressing a likeness in spirit. Not only does he adopt the true essence of gongbi, he develops the art form into his own style and signature. He inherits its elegance but discards its particularity on details. The flowers and birds in his paintings are not only the embodiment of beauty and truth, but also of his love for the world. Ping-Guang, combining freehand with gongbi, evolves a new style, which sets him at the leading position of modern gongbi painters.

Due to his love for Sichuan opera, Ping-Guang seeks inspiration within the operas, enriching his imagination and composition. A passage of beautiful singing in Sichuan opera can lead him into a dream-like world. His painting has the charm of poetry; his brush has the magic to turn ordinary flowers and birds into unusual and unforgettable artistic gems.

As a high-ranking artist, Professor Zhou has been awarded many times for his elegant artworks. He also had many personal exhibitions in Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, Malaysia, Canada and the United States. In the summer of 2004, Professor Zhou had his personal exhibition in Pacific Asia Museum, Pasadena. Through the success and popularity of his work, he is to publish a whole new collection of work soon.
