Zinaida Zatsepina was a Soviet painter who participated in numerous Russian exhibits and several international art shows. She painted portraits, still lifes and landscapes, earning accolades from the demanding Soviet audience.

Zatsepina was born in 1913 in Novaya Kalitva, Voronezh, a small village.  In 1929, she finished middle school and worked as an artist, correcting government photos in Novo-Khopersk.  She began studying art education at Tambov Art College in 1933 and graduated in 1936.  In 1937, she attended Penza Art College, qualifying with advanced, fourth-year standing.  She studied for two years under Goryushkina-Sorokapudo, a master teacher with great talent, who encouraged her to advance her art education.

In 1939, Zatsepina entered the Kiev Art Academy, where she trained for 9 years. She studied with 3 great teachers during this time: F. Krichevski, K. Trokhimenko, and O. Shovkunenko.  World War II interrupted her academic development from 1941 to 1945.  She was evacuated to Samarkand, where she studied at an affiliate school of the Moscow Art Academy. Then she was transferred to the Academy of Art in Samarkand and went to Zagorsk near Moscow.  She worked with the top artists and masters of that time: I. Grabar, C. Gerasimova, P. Pokarjevski, I. Shtilman and K. Yelevi.  Under their tutelage, Zatsepina quickly mastered oil painting technique.

After her re-evacuation to Kiev, Zatsepina continued her art education in the creative studio of Professor O. Shovkunenko at government-run Art Academy, graduating in 1948.  Her graduate thesis painting, titled, Playground, is in the Kiev Art Academy collection. She began exhibiting consistently in numerous art exhibits throughout Russia from 1949 on. At these exhibits she often explored the theme of mother’s love. She painted and drew country landscapes, still lifes, and portraits of children and people that were very close to her.

Her work remains in exhibition at several museums, including Nikolaevski Museum, Penz Art Museum, Kiev Art and Literature Museum of Shevchenko, Historical Museum of Pereyaslav-Khmelnitski, and the Chernovtsakh Museum.
