This biography from the Archives of AskART:

John Mulcahy was born in Hingham, Massachusetts in 1931. He studied at the St. Botolph Art School in Boston and with Arthur Stafford. He opened the Appointment Gallery in Hingham and moved to Cape Cod in the 1960's where he established the John Mulcahy Art Studio in Wellfleet in 1966.

He is one of the grandfathers of the great Outer Cape tradition of modern painting in the tradition of Motherwell and Hensche.  He has a unique style which is a blend of Abstract Expressionism and Impressionism.  He frequently paints on wood panels with a heavy impasto and emphasis on color, commonly also with a palette knife technique.  The works evoke a wonderful soul and warmth of color and in one sense can be viewed like a Pollock or de Kooning,on the other hand closer inspection will reveal all the light, sea, sand, boats, marsh grass and wildlife that the Outer Cape is famous for.  Most of his works are landscapes, seascapes, creek and marsh views of Provincetown, Truro and Wellfleet.

He also is known for interesting personal messages and portions of poems that he frequently writes on the verso of his paintings

Mulcahy is a member of the Provincetown Art Association (PAAM) and is in the permanent collection of the P.A.A.M.  His work has also been shown at the Provincetown Library, Castle Hill in Truro and at Renaissance III in Provincetown.
