GOETHE HOUSE TO SHOW WORKS OF EGON ADLER, EARLY GERMAN EXPRESSIONIST

The first one-man show in the U.S. of the works of Egon Adler, the "forgotten man" of the early German expressionist movement, will be on view at Goethe House, 1014 Fifth Avenue, January 7 through February 15, 1964.

Adler, who was born 1892 in Karlsbad, famous Bohemian spa, and died February 22, 1963 in New York, was closely associated with and influenced by such early Munich expressionists as Franz Marc, August Macke, and Alexej von Jawlensky. In Vienna he greatly enjoyed the company of Oskar Kokoschka. In Berlin he became closely involved in the feverish literary and artistic activities which centered around such periodicals as Die Akt i.on and Der Sturm, edited by Franz Pfemfert and Herwarth v Jalden, fountainheads of the expressionist movement.

Among his closest friends were the expressionist poets Jacob van Hoddis and Else Lasker-Schuler. Some of :Egon Adler's earliest pictures were included in the "Erster Deutscher Herbstsalon "arranged by Herwarth tvalden in 19l3. Later exhibitions were held in Munich and Stuttgart.

In 1933, he emigrated from Germany to Prague where he spent some years as a consultant to film producers. When the Nazi army occupied Czecho-Slovakia, he fled to France (in 1938) and later to the United States (1940). In the last two decades of his life, he was art director of a large U.S. corporation and developed his own abstract style, many examples of which are on view at Goethe House, the American Center for Cultural Relations with Germany. In all, 32 oil paintings, gouaches "and water colors are included in the exhibition.
