Shirley Raphael was born in 1937 in the Montréal area. She lives in retirement in Sutton (Québec). She has lived at different times in Canada, Mexico, Europe, Israel and the USA.
She studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, at the Pratt Graphic Art Centre of New York, at several North American universities (Concordia, Calgary, Southampton, Boston). She has also occasionally taught at several institutions.
She has been active as a painter and has specialized as a printmaker. She was, for a while, associated with the Atelier Graff, a Québec collective printmaking school and studio.
Her work is represented in many private and public collections, mainly in Canada and the USA, such as the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.
