Edmond De Maertelaere was born in Ghent, Belgium on October 8, 1876, the son of Polydorus De Maertelaere and Maria Theresia Van Der Straeten. He was a painter, draftsman, designer of posters and stained glass, book illustrator and muralist.  His painting subjects in realist style included floral still life, landscape, marine genre, and figures such as fisher folk, female nudes, ballet dancers, mothers and children and religious subjects.

At age 14, De Maertelaere won first prize in ornamental drawing at the local industrial school. Subsequently he enrolled at the "Royal Academy of Teeken, Sculpture and Architecture of the City of Ghent," then called the Academy of Fine Arts.  He left in 1898 as a prize winner of the gold medal and a premium of three thousand francs. With this money, at that time a small fortune, De Maertelaere went to Paris and completed two years at the Academie Julian with his teacher being Jean-Paul Laurens. The prize money also enabled him to travel to Florence, Rome, Vienna and Munich to study the 'great masters'. He especially found Pont Aven in Brittany an ideal artistic climate.

After the Paris period, Edmond De Maertelaere became established in Ghent, and remained there throughout his life, living in the spacious building number 9 of Sofie Van Aken Street. Once appointed as a teacher at the Ghent Academy, he did not participate much in exhibitions, and in terms of building a reputation as an artist, it was written that his independent character consistently worked against him, although he did have sales of drawings, watercolors, gouaches, pastels and paintings.

He also continued foreign travel, especially enjoying Ostend, where he often stayed. Several times he visited Germany, England, France, Italy, Netherlands, Austria, Spain and Switzerland

Edmond De Maertelaere died in 1938 at age 62 in Ghent, leaving his wife (Augusta) and four-year-old son, Raphael.
