| One of the first women to study art in Santa Fe with Dorothy Dunn, Rosalie James did paintings that focused on the rituals and domestic activities of her Navajo culture. Her figures are two-dimensional and have "profiled faces and frontal eyes, a convention linked to Anasazi Kiva murals", and their dress combines traditional and contemporary styles.
An example of her painting is Night Singers and Drummer (1936), which is tempera on paper and depicts the "essence of a Navajo ritual chant.
