Leopold Carl Müller (Dresden, 1834-Vienna, 1892)

He was a genre and landscape artist who became famous for founding the Austrian school of Orientalist painting.  He studied at the Vienna Academy under Karl von Blaas and Christian Ruben.  From 1862-1867, Müller worked as a historical illustrator for the Vienna office of Le Figaro.  During this time, Müller became inspired after a visit to Paris by the Orientalist genre painting of Eugene Fromentin.  Later, Müller traveled extensively to Hungary, Italy and Egypt and maintained studios in Venice (1870-72), Sicily (1872-3) and Cairo (1873-1880's).

In 1877 Müller took a position as professor at the Vienna Academy and later as a rector during 1890-91.  His most famous work is The Market In Cairo, 1878 which is at Osterreichische Gallerie Belvedere, Vienna, Austria.
