This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A children's book illustrator, greeting card and commercial design artist and collaborator with her husband, Clayton Knight on books about aviation, Katharine Sturges was born in Chicago, where she attended the Art Institute.  Then she traveled to Japan, and learning much about Asian art, applied that knowledge in a children's book, Little Pictures of Japan.

This Asian influence was apparent throughout her career, which including fashion design drawing for Harper's Bazaar, and commercial illustration for clients such as McCallum Hosiery and Oneida Community Silver.

In 1956 Sturges designed a commemorative toile or fabric hanging, depicting the career of President Dwight Eisenhower and subsequently used in Blair House in Washington DC.  She also created designs for Spode china, and for jewelry and fabrics for Macy's department store based on Peruvian motifs.
