Biography from a third party submitted on 09/10/2008:
| South Australian born Sue Flanagan is the Director of Adelaide’s original comedy club ‘Comix Comedy Cellars’ in partnership with her husband, comedian Dave Flanagan.
The daughter of a commercial artist, Flanagan has been fostering a keen interest in painting since childhood. This pursuit was encouraged by the support of Dave who motivated her to continue painting as a more serious venture, along with her daughter Purnima whose Indian heritage provides a constant source of inspiration.
Sue Flanagan has entered Australia’s most prestigious art awards, The Archibald Prize, in both 2004 and 2008. Her first entry, a portrait of Australian musician John Schumann, was subsequently purchased by Sony and used for John’s album cover Portrait – The Very Best of John Schumann’. Her most recent submission for the awards is a portrait of iconic Adelaide media personality, Dorinda Hafner.
Sue Flanagan works predominantly with oil paint on linen and her artistic pieces include both portraiture and still life. Often including underlying themes and messages within her paintings, she is influenced by Italian artist Michaelangelo Caravaggio’s theatrical style and tries to tell a story about the subjects or objects in her art work.
Flanagan's work has been commissioned, and several of her pieces are currently on display in Ray White Real Estate and Commonwealth Bank private collections. In addition, over the last sixteen years, her artwork has been displayed in a variety of exhibitions including the South Australian Living Arts (SALA) ‘Life and Desire’ exhibition in 2006, and the Australian Centre of Contemporary Art (ACCA) ‘Look at Me’ exhibition in 2007.
Sue Flanagan has pursued artistic studies at the Adelaide Central School of Arts and ArtLab Australia. She also has Bachelor of Arts with honours in history and is an accredited fitness instructor and personal trainer.
While Sue maintains a busy lifestyle, juggling business and family life, her artistic ventures remain a significant passion, and she is consistently developing and honing her skills for the craft.
