Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Painter, illustrator, muralist.  Born in Priego, Spain on March 3, 1891.  Having developed artistically at an early age, at ten Moya del Pino was apprenticed to an itinerant religious painter.  In 1904 he moved to Granada where he worked under Laterre, another religious painter, and attended night classes at the Granada School of Arts & Crafts.  He then attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid.  A traveling scholarship from that school enabled him to visit Italy, London, and Paris where he had further study at Académie Colarossi and spent time with Diego Rivera and Pablo Picasso.  Having made a reputation as a portrait painter while quite young, he was commissioned to paint the portrait of King Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1923.  Moya del Pino spent many years studying the works of Velasquez and painted 41 copies of his masterpieces.

The King elected to send the artist and the collection to the U.S. on exhibition tour. Arriving in New York in 1925, the exhibition continued on to San Francisco in 1926. Due to political problems at home and an affinity for California, he decided to make San Francisco his home.  Portrait commissions helped him to survive the early years in his adopted city.  In 1934 he was one of 26 artists selected by the federal goverment to paint murals in San Francisco's newly erected Coit Tower.  From 1935-38 he was an instructor at the CSFA.  He then moved across the bay to the small town of Ross in Marin County where he spent his remaining years and continued to produce some of his finest works.

Primarily a traditional painter, during the latter part of his career he occasionally painted in a more abstract manner. Moya del Pino died in Ross on March 7, 1969.
