This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A very private person who wanted no public attention called to his talents as a sculptor, Stanley Martineau lived in Washington Depot, Connecticut.  He modeled many leading Americans including U.S. Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman; capitalist W.K. Vanderbilt; world champion tennis player, Pierre Etchebaster; inventor, Alexander Graham Bell; and artist, James McNeill Whistler.

During World War II, he was a member of the Army's 23rd Headquarters Special Troops made up of artists, musicians, actors, and other creative types.  They were trained to deceive the enemy and to conceal the allies' weaknesses.  They learned as they worked, inventing principles of deception that are still used by the U.S. military today.
