A self-taught folk artist, Ashmead was born on April 27, 1947 in Trinidad, West Indies. He spent his youth living in Trinidad with his family who encouraged him to paint from boyhood on. In 1982, he immigrated to America where he began to take his natural artistic talents very seriously. Painting landscapes, figure and genre in oil and acrylics, he is also an adept wood carver. Residing in Brooklyn, New York, Ashmead sells his works from his studio and at local street fairs.
