Biography from a third party submitted on 09/23/2008:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Born in Jamshedpur, in 1942, Jahar Dasgupta went to Kala Bhavan, Shantiniketan at the age of 19.  He had among his teachers artists including Nandalal Bose, Ramkinkar Baij and Binod Behari Mukherjea.

He left the art school in 1964.

Since his departure, he has lived and worked in Kolkata.  Apart from exhibitions in major cities of India his works have been exhibited abroad in Nehru Centre, London; Maison De 1' Inde Salle, Paris; Salon Exposition, South Korea; Gallery Hansmania, Oslo, Norway; Club Bangladesh, Stockholm, Sweden.

In the August 2008, he participated in a Europe tour of art camps and exhibitions organized by Art Arcade.  London, Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam were cities that were visited.

In India Jahar Dasgupta has held many solos and group shows.  Major exhibitions are Lalit Kala Academy, Indian Habitat Centre, Lokayata Art Gallery and Elements Art gallery in New Delhi; Jehangir Art Gallery, Kamalnayan Bajaj Art Gallery and Prince of Wales Museum at Mumbai; Laxmana Art Gallery, Hyderabad.

His paintings are also displayed in his hometown in Kolkata.

Nature as with many artists is the inspiration behind his art. Women form an integral part of nature.  His use of colour is as forthright and bright as is seen in nature. The striking feature of his paintings is a dreamy and soft feel, in total empathy with the subjects of his drawing.  The artist in Jahar Dasgupta is not isolated from the world around him.  The human angst agitates and stirs his senses.  He searches for a way out through his paintings.
