John Robert  Hobart (1788-1863)

Baptized at Bildeston, Suffolk on 4 February 1788, son of John Hobart and his wife Elizabeth née Cross.  He married at Monks Eleigh, Suffolk in 1826, Harriet Podd and in 1844 an ‘animal painter’ at Monks Eleigh but by 1851 had moved to  Victoria Street, Ipswich and had a studio at Museum Street.  In 1851 a 63 year old artist & animal painter at 13 Victoria Street, Ipswich with his 49 year old wife Harriet, born Monks Eleigh and five children, all born at Monks Eleigh.  In 1861 they were living at 7 Princes Street, Ipswich with seven children, the youngest, 9 year old Ellen may have been a grand-daughter as she was born at Monks Eleigh in 1852, after they had moved to Ipswich. He died at Ipswich in 1863 and Harriet died at Monks Eleigh the following year.

An equestrian and sporting artist and the first official artist for the ‘Suffolk Horse Society’, his sporting subject matter includes portraits of hunters, pointers, shire horses but does not appear to have painted hunting scenes or horses in action.  He always signed and dated his work.

Information provided by Tony Copsey, author and researcher in Suffolk County, England.
