Biography from Claremont Museum of Art:
Carter Mull received an MFA from the California Institute of Arts in Valencia, California, in 2006, and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, in 2000.

Carter Mull’s work interrogates the photographic medium both as material construction and social fabrication.  Mull often works with luminously metallic color photographs, abstractions void of specific social reference, with barely there traces of what is actually ‘representable’.   In recent works, saturated colors dance like moving water across the surface of the image, calling attention to the plasticity of the material surface and the plasticity of that precise pop cultural detail.  Using painting and constructivism as his references, Mull subverts the script, suggesting that paint, reduced to its fundamental gesture, is what can point to reality, while photography, reduced to its elemental materiality, is what can point to fiction.

Mull uses photography as both a traditional two dimensional media, and as material for three dimensional works.  In Ground, hundreds of photographs are arranged on the floor, alluding to stop-motion photography, and subsequently referencing a distorted sense of time. Multiple perspectives of the same visual departure point create a psychological landscape which the viewer is invited to disrupt as they walk over the piece in the exhibition space.

In the works Revolution & Novelty and Equilibrium (Composed States), Mull plays with an illusion of natural elements, created by photographing an assemblage of haphazardly composed inorganic materials. The ambiguity of the image is heightened by crystalline and mirrored surfaces.

Selected solo exhibitions include Ethics of Everyday Friction at Rivington Arms in New York and Marc Foxx in Los Angeles (2007), State of Shifting Mirrors at Champion Fine Art in Los Angeles (2005) and Shifting States at Rivington Arms in New York (2005). He is represented by Rivington Arms in New York and Marc Foxx in Los Angeles. Carter Mull lives and works in Los Angeles.
