Biography from Knoke Fine Arts:
Born in Fort Mitchell, Virginia, Berneta Crowder (1920-2011) expressed her creativity in writing and staging plays at her church. She bought crayons for her child in the 1950’s and experimented with them herself.

Miss Crowder began to paint memory paintings of daily, seasonal, and holiday activities in her community, depicting houses, farms, churches, cars, trains and the activities of many people, all from days gone by.

She said: “I paint kind of like Mattie Lou O’Kelley of Georgia.

Living near Richmond, Virginia Crowder painted with acrylics at a table by her kitchen window. She sold works in fairs, galleries, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC, and exhibited at the show “Winter Past: Seasonal Impressions by Virginia Memory Painters”, in 1986 at the Meadow Farm Museum in Crump Park, Richmond, VA, along with other folk artist such as Queena Stovall and Eldridge Babley.

One of Berneta Crowder’s paintings is in the Virginia Artists Collection at Longwood College and is on the college’s thank you notes. She created the logo for the local Society to Prevent Cruelty to Animals.
