This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born Christian County, Missouri, Nov. 21, 1888 and died Silver Springs, Florida, Oct. 7, 1969, Adrian Woodall was a sculptor in wood.  He was raised on farms in Missouri and Oklahoma with a strong interest in but no training in drawing or carving.

He became an optometrist who carved soap heads to display spectacles in his office window. In 1927, inspired by Axel Petersen and G.N. Malm, he began carving in wood.  He carved figures and animals and exhibited widely through the Midwest, while living in Kansas in Clay Center in 1929-33 and in Hutchinson in 1935.

In 1936 he moved to Florida, where his hobby became his livelihood, and he taught a class in carving and wood sculpture at Florida Southern College in Lakeland.

Biography from Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery:
Adrian R. Woodall
(1888-1969)

Adrian R. Woodall was born on November 12, 1888 in Christian County, Missouri and was reared on farms in Missouri and Oklahoma. His schooling, which at no time included art training, was received in Oklahoma. As a boy, he had two ambitions, one was to draw and the other to raise live stock.

As a young adult, circumstances directed him to optometry and this was his profession for twenty years. It was during these years that he discovered his talent for sculpture. He was inspired by pictures of wood sculptures in the rotogravure section of the Kansas City Star, which depicted wood sculpture by Axel Peterson being shown at Bethany College.

During the years which followed he produced approximately two hundred figures - never duplicating an idea. He was a keen observer, and carved the figures he saw in the small town of Marion, Kansas where he lived. He exhibited in museums in Denver, Colorado Springs, Omaha, St. Joseph, Tulsa, and five times at the Midwestern Artists Exhibition in Kansas City, as well as numerous colleges in the Middle west.

Woodall retired from his optometry in 1936 and moved to Florida for his health. There his hobby became his livelihood. His last work carving was done in 1959. He died on October 7, 1969.
