Considered an eccentric artist in his home country of Hungary, Tivadar Csontvary-Kosztka was a pharmacist by occupation, who, at age 27, experienced a mystic vision where he got the message that he was to be a great plein air painter.  Visiting galleries and painting, he traveled extensively in Europe and from 1890, around the world visiting the Middle East, Africa and more places in Europe.   Most of his major works were painted between 1903 and 1909, and in 1907, an exhibition of his painting was held in Paris.

In Hungary, he had a reputation for being an "eccentric crank", reasons including that he was a vegetarian, pacifist, non-smoker and did not drink alcoholic beverages.  He also wrote religious pamphlets expression "fringe' views, and a loner, was thought later to have had schizophrenia.

However, after his death, his reputation grew.  A museum dedicated to his painting was created in Pecs, Hungary.  During his lifetime, he did over 100 paintings, which are so varied and unique that they are not categorized stylistically by art historians.
