Judith Mackey, born and raised in Hutchinson, Kansas, feels she is blessed each day of her life, to live on the beautiful tallgrass prairie where there are never ending vistas to paint.

Mackey, being self taught for more than thirty years of her career, she realized the more she learned, the more she needed to learn.  Seeking the advice of some of her favorite contemporaries, made her aware of new possibilities in both technique and subject matter.  Her associations with such artists as Wayne Wolfe, Jim Wilcox, Dan Gerhartz and Matt Smith, to name a few, really broadened her vision and her inspiration for painting.
The sizes of Mackey’s paintings are usually determined by the subject she is inspired to paint.  Most all of her paintings start with plein air, regardless of weather or season.  The few photos she takes, for detail reference only, are then worked into larger pieces.

Judith Mackey grew up in Hutchinson. Began painting as a self-taught artist in the 1960s while
living in Phoenix, AZ.  Lived in Osage City, Kansas in the 1970s then in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas.

Member: Women Artists of the American West; Topeka Artists Assoc; Hutchinson Art
Assoc; Osage County Art Guild. Awards: American Royal Western Art Assoc., 1988.
