|  Born Frank Shepard Fairey and known professionally as Shepard Fairey, he began his career after training at the Rhode Island School of Design, as a graphics artist, creating with his business, Alternate Graphics, stickers, skateboards and posters that he advertised through mailing catalogs. In 1994, a documentary film, Andre the Giant Has a Posse, featured Fairey "and the growing phenomenon of his subversive stickers and posters." This brought him much attention, and his business, based in his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina, grew. Among his new products was a skateboard video, ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), that featured skateboarders, many of them friends from his own skateboarding days.
In 1996, he moved from Providence, RI and then to San Diego, CA, to partner with Andy Howell in a company called Giant Distribution. From that time he has been in several marketing and design ventures, especially promoting action sports and has also opened an art gallery. He married Amanda Ayala, who has worked with him, and they have two daughters.
He also has created a clothing and art work line, OBEY, and in 2009, a controversial poster, Progress, to show his support of presidential candidate Barack Obama.
