Sky
Jones is a painter from the American West, born October 3, 1947 in Salt
Lake City, Utaha s Michael Whipple. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1971
with a bachelor degree in art. In 1984, he cahnged his name to Sky Jones. He has written two books on art
and life. The first, The Artists' Bible, written in 1983, is a compendium of successful actions for the Master Draftsman. The second book, Spirits,
was written in 1984 and is dedicated to Sky's "view from the other
side", a look at the varieties and natures of spirits and their
relationship to life and art. Both books are profusely
illustrated with paintings by Jones that reflect the philosophy of the
text.
Mysticism and the spirit are the underlying themes which
permeate his subject matter. Jones devotes his imagination and
perceptions to giving viewers images of other worlds and wild places to
view. His goal is to animate spirits, pulling entities out of the
paint at each step and to synthesize surrealism. "The bottom of his
bucket is the base of the subconscious mind".
His goal is to do
nothing but entertain and amuse u with educating "antics for the eye".
These are not cartoons but places that exist only in dreamland. Sky
opens up doors, windows. He knocks holes in ceilings and pounds down
walls into a place never before viewed on earth: a place of dancing
rhythms in crystalline vistas".
Sky Jones paints spirits and
anthropomorphic essences in three dimensional spaces. . . . with
spiraling streamers, multi-colored balloon planets. At times, it is
very serious, yet whimsical in nature. Gold, silver and fine metallic
particles are standard in Sky Jones creations. The Entities live in a
world of gold and silver linings".
Much of Sky's work is
involved in landscapes and seascapes, showing the effects and
influences of water on the terrain. He covers the gamut, focusing on
life's scenarios: "Waves crashing on shoreline, water cascading down
from high mountains; looking down gigantic canyon caverns; flying
across desert terrain, peeking into heaven or hell, serious or simply
joking."
Note: He has taken a vow of poverty that he has honored since the
birth of his first creation. One story depicts Jones bringing in
$2.5M in a benefit auction for the Salvation Army and turning the check
immediately over to the Salvation Army Captain in charge; only to be
found later that evening in the Salvation Army food line. He has
been hounded by the IRS for "their share" and he's always ignored
them. Because of some of his "antics", (as some call them), the
controversy that surrounds Jones is almost as bizarre as that of Van
Gogh who didn't sell one piece of his art until after his death.
In 2003 he began signing his art as "Siren Bliss".
