| Artist Statement:
I grew up in Southwestern New Mexico, 1951-1969 and then left for college. I am the son of an artist, Curtis Tabor. I have been painting, drawing, and doing artwork since I can remember. My father is an artist, and whenever he put his palette down I would pick it up. I grew up in the plains of New Mexico within view of distant blue mountains, so there is a feeling of light, color, and clear air in most of my landscape paintings, including the ones done in New England. One gallery owner appreciatively commented that I am the only artist she knows who paints Boston city scenes with Sante Fe colors.
I use an economy of shape and composition and an exaggerated color scheme. My intent is that the viewer will be uplifted, and feel a hint of New Mexico air when looking at my work.
Much of my work is done from memory, allowing me to work with the essence of the mood and feeling of the scene rather than the photographic quality of the location. It is my goal to exaggerate color and simplify the design to provide a clear and concise message.
I have been involved in what I call my dream series recently. I use collage and mixed media for the "shiftness" of capturing a moment or an idea, painting in around and through the selected images with often unrelated objects to give a push and pull of dream-like qualities.
