Richard Charles Kirsten (AKA: Richard Kirsten Daiensai) is a painter, printmaker, sculptor, illustrator and Buddhist priest who was born in Chicago, Illinois, and lives in Seattle, Washington, where he has for most of his life.  Since 1957, he has also lived for 3 to 8 months a year in Japan, where he produces much of his work inspired by visits to remote Buddhist shrines and temples there, and in South Korea.
His mediums are acrylics, watercolour, wood block print, mixed mediums and bronze sculpture.  His subjects are figures, animals, flowers, birds, humour, Buddha, landscape, fantasy and semi abstract, all primarily focusing on spirituality and Zen Buddhism.  His styles are surrealism, expressionism, semi abstraction and modernism.
He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Washington.
He is a member of the American Federation of Arts, the Northwest Watercolour Society (President 1968 –1969),  Artists Equity (Seattle President 1952 –1956), Northwest Printmakers and the American Artists Professional League.  During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946.
He had a solo exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum in 1943 and has been included in numerous group shows there from 1945 to 1969.  He has also exhibited at the Frye Museum (Seattle) from 1960 to 1965 and in 1969.  In addition, he has exhibited in many commercial galleries and continues to have regular exhibitions of new works in the two galleries he is affiliated with in Washington State (Kirsten and Harbor).
His work is in many private collections.  It is also in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC), the Seattle Art Museum, the Library of Congress (Washington, D.C.) and the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art.
He is listed in Jaques Cattell Press, Who's Who in American Art 15th Edition  (1982), published by R. R. Bowker Co. (1204 pgs); in Who’s Who in American Art 2001-2002, 24th Edition (2001), published by Marquis (1490 pgs); and (prematurely) in Falk's Who Was Who in American Art (3 volumes).
He is the author of the book Smile (2004), M Q Publications (256 pgs, colour).  And he has illustrated the Robert Allen books Small Passing Storm, Happy as a Nobody, and Now Celebrate, all published by M Q Publications.
