Biography from Meibohm Fine Arts, Inc.:
James T. Shaffer (American, 1903-1986) was a noted artist, illustrator and teacher, often known for his portrait and figurative works, landscapes, still lifes, floral still lifes, architectural and illustrative pieces, children and animals.

Shaffer taught part-time at the Albright Art School in the 1930’s and was a member of the Buffalo Society of Artists.  His finest paintings were done during that time period. During WWII he worked at Scott Aviation in Buffalo, NY and continued working there until he retired.  In this sense he was a “Sunday Painter”, specializing in portraits of his Lancaster, NY neighbors.

He resided and maintained his studio out of his home at 5986 Broadway, Lancaster, NY.

His work can be found in the Burchfield-Penney Art Center’s permanent collection, Buffalo, NY.  Shaffer often gave pieces of his artwork to family and friends, some in exchange for gifts and services of others.  He worked in oil, watercolor, charcoal, pencil, tempera, pastel and pen & ink.

Exhibitions of his work were held at the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy annual exhibit of Western New York artists and Meibohm Fine Arts in 1991, East Aurora, NY.
