This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Zilvinas Kempinas was a reseident at Atelier Calder in Sache, France from January to June 2008
He was born in 1969 in Lithuania, and lives and works in New York.

Zilvinas Kempinas experiments with the possibilities of movement in a work of art. In his installations, he often uses industrial fans to activate the air, floating a band of video tape that undulates, making random forms in space. The magnetic tape is rerouted from its normal application and is used like any material in conventional sculpture. The artist fully uses its physical properties – its weightlessness, mobility and transparency. Kempinas plays with the graphic qualities of the magnetic tape inherent to its color and texture, reflecting the least amount of light. These installations fully inhabit the exhibition area, the space completely in movement, creating a mysterious and poetic universe where the viewer can evolve.

Zilvinas Kempinas has had several solo exhibitions, notably at the Center for Contemporary Art at P.S.1 in New York (2007), at the Spencer Brownstone Gallery in New York (2004 – 2007), at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2006), and at the Contemporary Art Center (CAC) in Vilnius (1994-2007).

He has also participated in several group exhibitions: in France at the FRAC Languedoc Roussillon in Montpellier for the exhibition Voyage Intérieur (2007), and at the CRAC – Centre d’Art Contemporain in Sète (2006). In 2007, he exhibited at the Museum for Contemporary Art in Tampa, Florida. He has upcoming exhibitions in 2008 at the SFMoMA in San Francisco, and at the biennial for contemporary art, Manif d’Art, in Quebec, Canada.
