This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Andrew Wilson Smith, American Sculptor

"As an artist, Mr. Smith is dedicated to working within and expanding upon the tradition of Western art.  He describes this tradition as a kind of living communion between our forebears, us, and those who have not yet been born. The links in this chain are the cultural artifacts that have been left to us and the artifacts that we will leave to our successors."

Smith began his art education at the South Bend Regional Museum of Art in South Bend, Indiana and also studied with Douglas Kinsey at the University of Notre Dame.  He continued at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art in Philadelphia and the Florence Academy of Art in Italy.  During his years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art, he focused much of his energy on copying casts from the school’s extensive collection.  He then created new works such as a herm-style bust of Johnny Cash, Cantor Canticorum.  At the Florence Academy, he modeled a portrait bust of Antigone in an attempt to convey the emotions expressed in the tragedy of Sophocles.

He served as an apprentice to Anthony Visco, a Philadelphia sculptor, on St. Thomas of Villanova, a life-size, four-figure group cast in bronze and installed at the University of Villanova in Pennsylvania.  He also assisted on St. Nicolas, a life-size statue cast in plaster and installed at the American shrine to St. Rita da Cascia in Philadelphia.  He worked with Miklos Simon, sculptor in Chicago on numerous small projects such as plaster and wax castings, mod-making, metal fabrication, and clay modeling.  In addition, he worked with Alexander Stoddart, a sculptor in Scotland, assisting in the casting of two life-size figures in plaster, titled Genii of Great Britain, installed at the Queen’s Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace, London.

Smith completed  a bronze sculpture for a fountain commissioned by the American School in Lugano, Switzerland.  The sculpture depicts the Sibyl of Cumea, described in the Aeneid as Aeneis’ counselor and guide.  She is depicted as a woman of wisdom and subtle beauty seated on Mount St. Salvatore, the mountain that rises above the school.

He has also completed the models for a commission for two capitals for the Romanesque-style columns that will flank the main entry door into the Benedictine Annunciation Monastery at Clear Creek, presently in construction in Eastern Oklahoma.  Preliminary versions of the capitals, worked in clay and cast in plaster, were modeled in order to work out the complex iconographic program. The capitals will be carved in limestone.

Smith has finished a composition of eight heroic sized herm figures designed for the campus of California State University at Stanislaws. These portraits depict Homer and Sappho along with six Californian authors and poets.

Smith has served as instructor in art and architecture at St. Gregory's Academy from spring 2009 to spring 2010 as well as in 2008-2009, as lecturer in art history at Wyoming Catholic College in fall of 2008, and as instructor for art at the South Bend Regional Museum of Art in 2007.
