BERTHA JANSZ  (    – 1980)

Little information is available about the life of Bertha Maud Jansz and what is known is sketchy at best, while her work is difficult to come by as much of it remains in private collections.
She started her study of art in her twenties and was a regular exhibitor at the annual exhibitions of the Ceylon Society of Arts where she won many prizes, including for two years in succession, the prestigious Governor’s Prize for Best Exhibit.

A longstanding devotee of Mudaliyar A.C.G.S. Amerasekera, her work belonged to the traditional school of painting.   served for some time as the Principal of The Amerasekera School of Art on Dawson Road (now renamed Amarasekera Mawatha), Havelock Town.  A softspoken, gentle lady, Miss Jansz also conducted private art classes and some of her students still recall the soft-spoken, kindly manner in which she conducted her lessons.  They remember how she would draw up at their homes in a rickshaw – a light-framed two-wheeled open vehicle that was pulled along by a man. No longer socially acceptable, this mode of transport was however a common sight on the roads of Colombo in the 1930s and even up to the late 1950s.

An accomplished watercolor painter, one of her paintings in this medium is on permanent display at the National Art Gallery, Colombo.  She was equally well versed in the use of other media and has painted many portraits and landscapes in oils.  A favorite subject of hers was the flamboyant tree, which features as the focal point in many of her landscapes. Her work centered round the life of the humble villager and she has painted many scenes depicting the simple life styles of the countryside.

She lived for some years at “Leander House” – No. 41, Turret Road, Colpetty and spent her later years as a resident at the St Nikolaas’ Home for Elders, where she died on May 5, 1980.
